none of the subscriptions from other than local sources
being utilised for local work. The annual local expenditure
of the Hospital approximates to $100,000 per annum and the
Government gets exceedingly good value in return for its
contribution.
(b).
The Kwang Wa Hospital is an offshoot of
the Tung Wa Hospital, and was opened in 1911 in Taumati on the Kowloon side. It was hoped that with the extension of Kowloon, the Hospital would become self-supporting: but the population of the peninsula has remained so far of the poor- -er classes, Dock hands and small shop-keepers, and the Hospital whose expenses amount to some 832,000 a year has only the following regular income:-

the difference being borrowed from the Tung Va Hospital, and made good as far as may be by special efforts in the way of theatres and the like. Appeals of this nature have as ú rule to be made in the richer districts, outside Kowloon: and cannot be counted upon for a satisfactory response if they become too frequent. Meanwhile the popularity of the Kwong Wa Hospital is growing: and there seems little likeli- -hood in the immediate future of income from the peninsula
meeting the expenditure.
Both the Tung Wa and Kwong Wa Hospitals give Western or Chinese treatment, at the option of the patients, and both are supervised entirely as concerns Western medicine, and in matters of cleanliness and general
by European hygiene as concerns the Chinese treatment
medical officers.
